What is Rotary Forging? Rotary Forging is a metal "roll-forging" process that utilizes a special die arrangement that continuously deforms a small area of the work-piece at a time, incrementally forming the entire part. Rotary Forging, a true rolling process, is a more efficient metal forming process, in that it requires less force and generates less heat and die wear then conventional closed die forging. In Rotary Forging, the axis of the upper die is tilted at a small angle with respect to the lower die; the angled die arrangement creates a much smaller contact or working area when compared to the total part. Both dies rotate, rolling circumferentially around the work-piece continuously deforming it until the final shape is formed. Because the force necessary to produce deformation is directly proportional to the area over which it acts, rotary forging only requires about ten percent of the force required by conventional closed die forging techniques.
